Pause

“God’s posture of rest was not without His continued provision.”

-Holy Hygge by Jamie Erickson

This idea of Sabbath, or intentional rest, is a practice of trusting God to fully to meet our needs and to not lean on our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6). It’s a chance to slow down, breathe, intentionally focus on the important basics, then move into our new week out of that place of Sabbath instead of collapsing at the end of it.

It’s a full exhale.

It’s a place to create space by letting go of what has been done and letting God restore what is needed for the week to come.

The idea of Sabbath doesn’t have to be hyper spiritual. There are some very practical ways to Sabbath:

-Nap: I had a spiritual mentor once tell me, “Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is sleep.”

-Simple meal with family: Nothing that causes you extra work or time away from resting. Our family often opts for a frozen pizza and a pre-made salad kit.

-Spend time outdoors: Whether it is a warm, sunny day or a chilly winter one, find a way to get in nature to restore your soul.

-Read or do a puzzle instead of turning on the television: These quieter tasks often lead to sweet conversation and memories.

-Restorative yoga: This very gentle movement practice creates openness in your body without working up a sweat. Doing it with others can be lovely as well.

-Family walk: It’s amazing how open our hearts get when we move outside together.

-Gather around a fire, spend time talking and sharing a meal: Bringing it back to the basics allows room for conversation, encouragement and refreshing.

Sabbath is a time that is set apart to allow God to fully restore you. It is not a time to catch up on your to-do list or chore. Find a time to fully devote to rest and see how God responds.
